GUIDE

Can your agent answer calls?

Understand the difference between an assigned number, an inbound workflow, and a personal assistant.

An assigned number creates a place for incoming calls to arrive. What happens next depends on the agent configuration, routing, provider availability, and the boundaries of the workflow. A number by itself does not make the agent ready to answer every kind of call.

Define what callers should hear

Write a greeting that identifies the business or purpose accurately. Decide what information to collect and what questions the agent may answer from approved knowledge. Give it a clear escalation path when a request does not fit the workflow.

Connect knowledge with care

A file can help an agent answer a common question, but it can also contain outdated or sensitive information. Use sources your team is allowed to share in the relevant context. Review the file contents and update process before putting the number in front of customers.

Plan for exceptions

Some calls should go to a person. Others may need a fallback message if a provider is unavailable or the account reaches a limit. A clear exception path is more useful than a promise that every call will be completed perfectly.

Test the actual route

Call the configured number from a phone you control. Check the greeting, language, transfer behavior where configured, transcript, and resulting action. A browser demo and a production inbound number are different routes and should both be reviewed where they are part of the deployment.

Set it up with the right boundaries

Start with a configured workspace, an authenticated account, and a number that is approved for the workflow. Verify the owner phone and test with a destination you control. Keep the first request narrow enough to review without guessing what a successful result should look like.

Before you rely on it, check that the plan, the number, your consent rules, and the usage limits fit the work. If something is not set up, the assistant should say so plainly rather than report a success that did not happen. The person using the assistant should always be able to stop and review the next action.

Explore the Phone plan, read the MCP overview, or book a demo to talk through a specific workflow. The best first setup is one your team can explain, test, and review.
